United Nations: India has been elected for the seventh time to the United Nations’ Human Rights Council for the term 2026-28. The Geneva-based 47-member Human Rights Council is the main UN body promoting and protecting human rights around the world, reviewing the situation in member countries, and providing a forum to discuss issues.

In a post on X, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, said, “India was elected to the Human Rights Council for the term 2026-28 @UN for the seventh time today (Tuesday). Thank all delegations for their overwhelming support.”

This election reflects India's unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. We look forward to serve this objective during our tenure", he said.

The Human Rights Council is the main intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for human rights. Established in 2006 by the General Assembly, it is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.

At UN, India slams Pakistan for terrorism

India has slammed Pakistan at the UNGA for its grave violations of child rights and cross-border terrorism. Speaking at the 80th UNGA session, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey defended India's counter-terror actions in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under "Operation Sindoor" as a legitimate and necessary response to protect civilians, especially children.

Dubey noted that Pakistan remains one of the "most serious violators" of the Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) agenda. He cited the UN Secretary-General's 2025 report on CAAC to highlight Pakistan's role in cross-border terrorism, shelling, and airstrikes that have led to the killing and maiming of Afghan children.
