Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has made an important move by announcing that MBBS courses will now be offered in Hindi, in addition to English, starting from the 2024-2025 academic session.

The decision, made on Hindi Diwas (September 14), follows in the footsteps of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, both of which have already implemented Hindi as a medium of instruction for their medical education. Last year, Uttarakhand had taken this decision.

This transition will begin with two medical colleges: Sampurnanand Medical College in Jodhpur and Medical College of Barmer. Both institutions, affiliated with Marwar Medical University, will offer Hindi as an option for students pursuing their MBBS degrees.

While the choice to study in Hindi is optional, Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department, Gayatri Rathore, emphasized that students can now choose between Hindi and English. The move aligns with a promise made earlier in the state’s budget to incorporate Hindi into medical education.

To support this significant change, the Rajasthan government has tasked its health department with the responsibility of arranging textbooks and study materials in Hindi. Initially, these resources will be available for the first-year MBBS students, ensuring they have the support needed to transition smoothly.

Rajasthan's step comes on the heels of a similar initiative in Chhattisgarh, where Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai recently declared that MBBS courses would be taught in Hindi from the current academic session. Sai highlighted that this shift is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, which he expressed during a 2022 rally in Uttar Pradesh, to make medical education more accessible in regional languages.
