Nation remembers former PM Rajiv Gandhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 21 paid tributes to former PM and Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his death anniversary.”

Rajiv Gandhi’s family, including Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, paid floral tributes at his memorial, Veer Bhumi, in New Delhi.

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister in October 1984 following the assassination of his mother and then PM Indira Gandhi. At the age of 40, he became the youngest Prime Minister in India’s history.

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi served as Prime Minister until December 1989. He was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election rally in Sriperumbudur by a suicide bomber linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
