Utica, NY: Special Olympics New York announced Damien Gallo as its 2026 Athlete of the Year during Opening Ceremonies at the 2026 Summer State Games on June 5 in Utica.
A dedicated athlete, leader, and community volunteer, Gallo embodies the values of Special Olympics through his year-round participation in sports, service on the Downstate Athlete Leadership Council, and commitment to representing Special Olympics New York at events throughout the year.
For Gallo, Special Olympics is a source of motivation and belonging. “It makes me feel motivated,” he said. “It gives me a boost.”
He also credits his teammates and coaches for helping make his experience so special. “Our teammates are fun. We're like a big family,” Gallo said. “The coaches, if it weren't for them, we wouldn't be here today.”
In addition to competing in multiple sports, Gallo works full time and serves his community as a volunteer firefighter.
Christina Ragazzini, head coach of the Nassau County Pin Crushers, said Gallo's impact extends far beyond the playing field. “He holds a very special place on our team,” she said. “He's a true leader, cares about everybody, and is passionate about everything he does. You have a great Athlete of the Year on your hands.”
Gallo's positivity, leadership, and dedication have made him a respected role model throughout the Special Olympics New York Community. Whether competing, volunteering, or supporting his fellow athletes, he consistently demonstrates the spirit of inclusion, determination, and excellence.
