In a powerful demonstration featured on National Geographic’s Brain Games, two contrasting situations highlighted how mindset and environment influence performance.  The experiment featured two individuals with very different levels of ability: a young girl who was not skilled at basketball and a professional player who was highly experienced. At the beginning, both were asked to make baskets under normal conditions. As expected, the girl struggled to score, while the professional player performed well. Their performance clearly matched their skill levels.

Then, both participants were blindfolded, removing their ability to see the basket. At this point, their performance began to be shaped not by skill, but by the feedback they received.

When the girl took her shots, the crowd cheered enthusiastically, even when she missed. Believing she was succeeding, her confidence grew. With this newfound confidence, her performance improved, and she eventually started making baskets.

In contrast, the professional player was met with negative reactions. When he missed, the crowd booed. This unexpected negativity introduced doubt and pressure, disrupting his usual confidence. Even after the blindfold was removed, his performance declined, as his mindset had been affected.

This experiment clearly demonstrates that performance is not determined by ability alone. A positive and encouraging environment can elevate an individual beyond perceived limits, while negativity can hinder even the most skilled. Ultimately, it is our mindset, shaped by the environment around us, that determines how well we perform.

This principle is beautifully reflected in satsang at BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, which I have personally experienced as a deeply positive and uplifting environment. In satsang, individuals are surrounded by encouragement, guidance, and spiritual values that nurture inner growth. Just as the cheering crowd helped the young girl discover her potential, satsang creates an atmosphere where individuals feel supported and inspired to improve.

At the heart of this environment is the guidance of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj. Under his guidance, a culture of positivity flourishes. Through his gentle words and caring approach, he inspires virtues such as humility, seva, and unity, creating an atmosphere where individuals feel valued and motivated to become better versions of themselves.

This positive environment is also reinforced by swamis and senior devotees who actively guide individuals in practical ways. Children are encouraged to focus on their studies and develop strong values. Youth are inspired to stay disciplined and make wise life choices. Many are guided to give up addictions and harmful habits, and to adopt healthier, more purposeful lifestyles. In this way, satsang does not only uplift spiritually, but also helps individuals improve in their day-to-day lives.

Through regular assemblies, spiritual discourses, and the company of devotees, these values are strengthened. In such an environment, individuals are not judged for their shortcomings but are gently guided to rise above them. This positivity builds confidence, encourages discipline, and helps one stay focused on a higher purpose.

Moreover, satsang fosters a deep sense of belonging. Being part of a community that shares common values creates inner stability and peace. When individuals feel supported, they are better equipped to face life’s challenges with resilience and clarity.

The impact of satsang extends beyond personal growth. Those nurtured in such an environment carry these values into their homes, workplaces, and communities, becoming a source of positivity for others.

Ultimately, the environment we choose shapes who we become. Satsang offers a space filled with positivity, purpose, and spiritual strength—enabling individuals not only to succeed in life, but to grow closer to Bhagwan and experience lasting fulfillment.
