In an age characterized by increasing despair and anxiety, Pramukh Swami Maharaj's wisdom, shared during a Youth Convention in Orlando, Florida, in 2000, on the importance of self-control and discipline, is more relevant than ever. Although material wealth has increased, happiness has diminished, with people craving independence and freedom at the expense of moral restraints.
Pramukh Swami Maharaj emphasized that exercising restraint and self-control leads to happier living. During the ancient gurukul education system, students had to study compulsorily until 25 years of age. Their first lesson was about discipline. They obeyed the guru's commands and learned what he taught. When they went home, they obeyed their parents. But today, these sentiments have waned, and we consequently face problems.
The absence of self-control is a significant issue. An elephant becomes useful when it is controlled with an ankush. One may feel why there should be such pressure? But it is not pressure, it is a means of control. Similarly, to help us live a good, meaningful life, the great sages and seers have prescribed a moral code of conduct in the shastras.. The great sages prescribed moral codes of conduct in the shastras to ensure a meaningful, happy life. However, people today resist these teachings, wanting unrestricted freedom, leading to frustration and difficulties.
Satsang, or the company of those who are true and good, can inspire wholesome thoughts and maintain one's integrity. On the other hand, bad company can destroy morality, family, and social structures. People's abandonment of moral restraints and discipline has led to a decline in progress and a loss of cultural values.
To realize ekantik dharma (dharma, jnan, vairagya, and bhakti), one must preserve moral restraints. The permissive climate in society is harmful, and individuals must exercise discrimination through satsang. Discipline is crucial in controlling one's mind and senses, and renouncing bad company is essential.
Identifying and refraining from kusang, or bad company, helps protect one's morality, even if it means sacrificing monetary gains or worldly success. Bhagwan Swaminarayan advocated for shunning bad company and anything that hinders dharma. With faith, God's assistance is assured.
The modern world's emphasis on independence and freedom has led to a loss of cultural roots and values. People must resist the temptation of a seductive social climate and follow their true values by cultivating faith in dharma, God, and his commands. By preserving spiritual values, individuals can fortify their minds, leading to better thoughts, more peace, and progress.
