Washington: The US Supreme Court has greenlit the President Donald Trump administration’s plans to resume deportations of undocumented migrants to countries that are not their homeland.

The ruling is a notable win for the Trump administration, which had challenged the lower court's April order, which required the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to notify migrants in writing about their destinations and to give them a chance to contest their deportation due to fears of torture.

The Supreme Court's ruling came after a recent incident in which immigration authorities placed eight migrants from Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cuba on a flight destined for South Sudan, but the flight was then diverted to a US naval base in Djibouti after a federal judge's intervention.

DHS welcomed the Supreme Court's move as a “victory for the safety and security of the American people". In a post on X, it said: “Fire up the deportation planes... DHS can now execute its lawful authority and remove illegal aliens to a country willing to accept them".

The ongoing crackdown on immigrants comes as a result of President Donald Trump's commitment to deport millions of individuals residing in the United States without legal status. (ToI inputs)
