President Donald Trump is likely to be among the 287 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2026, for his continuous efforts to resolve global conflicts.
Washington: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has received a total of 287 nominations for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, and US President Donald Trump is expected to be among them, as leaders of Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have stated that they nominated him, citing his efforts to resolve conflicts.
The figure, announced on Thursday, includes 208 individuals and 79 organisations. Many new names made it to the list this year.
Although the full list stays confidential, several names have surfaced through public disclosures by the Norwegian lawmaker who nominated them. US Senator Lisa Murkowski and Greenlandic-Danish parliamentarian Aaja Chemnitz were nominated for their long-standing trust-building efforts.
Trump has asserted that his diplomatic interventions since returning to office have helped resolve or de-escalate eight major international conflicts. He suggested that such efforts merit consideration for a Nobel Peace Prize.
The US President earlier claimed that he "ended 8 wars in just 8 months" in a social media post with the title "the president of peace".
His latest addition was the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. The other seven were between Israel and Iran, Pakistan and India, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Serbia and Kosovo.
The US-Israel and Iran conflict is currently undergoing a ‘delicate ceasefire’ amid the Strait of Hormuz blockade.
The new secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Kristian Berg Harpviken, who assumed the role in January 2025, admitted he was struck by how much the list changes every year. "Since I am new in the job, one of the things that has to some extent surprised me is how much renewal there is from year to year on the list," Harpviken said.
"Together they have worked relentlessly to build trust and to secure a peaceful development of the Arctic region over many years," said Norwegian lawmaker Lars Haltbrekken, who nominated them.
According to reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (nominated together with the people of Ukraine), climate activist Greta Thunberg, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, and Moldovan President Maia Sandu were also nominated.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9, and the award ceremony will take place on December 10 in Oslo.
