New York: After a shocking assassination attempt, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is reportedly in stable condition and “there is cause for optimism”.

Fico is currently recovering in the university hospital Banska Bystrica, close to the place where he was shot, said reports.

Healthcare providers will take a call on Monday if he should be transferred to the capital Bratislava or not.

Fico, 59, was hit by several gunshots and went through two operations. The suspect, called ‘lone wolf,’  has been charged with attempted murder.

Since the assassination attempt, local media reported that there has been an increase in threats against other politicians too.

A court was set to decide if the suspect should be held in pre-trial detention.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on Fico, calling it a "cowardly and dastardly act".

"Deeply shocked at the news of the shooting at Slovakia’s Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Robert Fico. I strongly condemn this cowardly and dastardly act and wish PM Fico a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the people of the Slovak Republic,” PM Modi posted on X.

Classified as a politically motivated assassination attempt, the attack happened in the town of Handlova, some 150 km northeast of the capital.
