Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting US military positions in Kuwait and Bahrain this week, claiming the operation was retaliation for recent American strikes on Qeshm Island, a strategically important Iranian island near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its Aerospace Force carried out the attacks after US forces allegedly struck a communications tower south of Qeshm Island and targeted Iranian assets near the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran described the operation as an initial response and warned that any further attacks on Iranian territory would trigger stronger retaliation.

In an initial statement, the Kuwaiti Army's General Staff said air defences were "currently confronting hostile missile and drone attacks". According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the attacks failed to achieve their objectives, stating that no American military installations in Bahrain were struck.

The latest exchange marks another escalation in the months-long confrontation between Washington and Tehran, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to preserve a fragile ceasefire. The renewed hostilities have heightened concerns about security in the Gulf and the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.

Talks still on: Trump

US President Donald Trump has pushed back against reports that peace talks between Washington and Tehran have broken down. He insisted that negotiations with Iran are ongoing despite recent speculation of a halt in talks.

"Fake News Reports that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the USA stopped speaking a few days ago are false and erroneous. The conversations between us have been going on continuously, including four days ago, three days ago, two days ago, one day ago, and today," he wrote in a Truth Social post.

While communication channels remain open, according to the US president, major disagreements persist over Lebanon and Gaza. Iran had suspended talks, citing continued Israeli military operations in both territories. Tehran's nuclear program and the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz are also bigger sticking points in the negotiations.
