Warsaw: Poland closed its main airport in Warsaw and scrambled fighter jets along with NATO allies on September 9 after reports that Russian drones linked to Moscow’s war in neighbouring Ukraine had entered its airspace, reported CNN. Ukraine’s air force initially said that Russian drones crossed into Polish territory, posing a threat to the city of Zamosc. The statement was later deleted from its Telegram channel, Reuters reported.
According to Poland’s military command, Polish airspace was repeatedly violated by “drone-type objects” during the Russian attack across the border in Ukraine. “Some of the drones that entered our airspace were shot down. Efforts are underway to search for and locate the possible crash sites of these objects,” Poland’s Operational Command said in a statement on X.
Following the attack, Poland closed down four airports, including its main Chopin Airport in Warsaw. Poland’s military said its radars picked up more than 10 objects violating its airspace. The ones that looked dangerous were “neutralized.” The army called the incident an “act of aggression,” and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that Polish aircraft had “used weapons against hostile objects.” He also said Poland is in constant touch with NATO command.
