Russian President Vladimir Putin said the conflict in Ukraine would not have started had Donald Trump been the President of the US in 2022.
Washington: US President Donald Trump said on August 15 that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin made "very productive" progress but reached no deal after a nearly three-hour summit in Anchorage, Alaska, focused on ending the war in Ukraine.
"There were many, many points that we agreed on," Trump said at a joint press conference with Putin. "I would say a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there, but we've made some headway. So there's no deal until there's a deal."
Putin said that the agreements reached during the talks would serve as a starting point for settling the Ukraine conflict and restoring the relations between Russia and US. “I expect that today's agreements will become a reference point, not only for solving the Ukrainian problem, but will also launch the restoration of business-like, pragmatic relations between Russia and the United States,” Putin said. He also warned Europe not to "torpedo the nascent progress".
After the meeting between the two leaders in Alaska, Putin thanked Trump for his cooperation and “friendly tone of conversation”.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on August 15 that Russia’s continued attacks, even on the day of high-level negotiations, prove Moscow has no intention of ending the war. “On the day of negotiations, the Russians are killing as well. And that speaks volumes,” Zelenskyy said on X.

Trump-Modi meeting on cards? Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the United States next month for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and plans are afoot to schedule a meeting with President Donald Trump to iron out issues on trade amid a downturn in ties, according to multiple reports. Apart from Trump, PM Modi will also likely hold high-level meetings with foreign leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, sources said. The UNGA summit will be held in New York City in September. Global leaders will start arriving during the week, starting September 23. There was, however, no official confirmation from either side. If the meeting goes well, Modi would personally invite Trump to visit India for the QUAD summit, which is scheduled in October. |
