New Delhi: As Donald Trump pushes for the ‘America First' agenda, world leaders are set to gather for two major summits — the APEC summit of 21 Asia-Pacific economies in Peru this week and a Group of 20 (G20) meeting in Brazil next week. With US President Joe Biden embarking on a final trip to South America for the two key summits, discussions are likely to focus on the incoming Trump administration and its potential impact on global trade, alliances, and security.
"The APEC and G20 will be about one thing ... and that is Donald Trump - and what to expect from the next Trump administration on trade, alliances, and other issues," Victor Cha, president of the Geopolitics and Foreign Policy Department at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Reuters news agency.
Biden is expected to express "deep concern" over North Korea's troop deployment to Russia during the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Peru. The G20 Leaders' Summit, scheduled from November 18 to 19 in Rio de Janeiro, is happening as China braces for fractious relations ahead with the US. In his first term, Trump unleashed a trade and tech war with China and reframed the rising power as an American rival. With Trump’s second term raising the threat of further heavy tariffs and uncertainty, Xi and his delegation will be carefully calibrating their diplomacy at the two meetings, according to reports.
President Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese are among the leaders also expected to attend both summits, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G20 Summit.
Dominica to confer highest national honor on PM ModiPrime Minister Narendra Modi will receive Dominica’s highest national award, the 'Dominica Award of Honor,' in recognition of his vital support to it during the Covid-19 pandemic and his commitment to strengthening India-Dominica relations. President Sylvanie Burton will bestow the award during the India-CARICOM Summit, set to take place in Georgetown, Guyana, from November 19 to 21. In February 2021, Prime Minister Modi supplied Dominica with 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine — "a generous gift which enabled Dominica to extend support to its Caribbean neighbors", said the government of Dominica. The award also recognizes India’s support for Dominica in education and information technology under PM Modi’s leadership, as well as his role in promoting climate resilience-building initiatives and sustainable development on a global level. |
