New Delhi: Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) has declared that it will deliver the verdict against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on November 17, following her trial in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity.

Hasina, her home minister in the ousted Awami League government, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and then inspector general of police (IGP) or police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun were tried in the tribunal.

Tension simmered across the nation on November 12 as crude bomb and arson attacks rocked Dhaka and other parts of the country ahead of the verdict date announcement. Further, Bangladesh’s Awami League announced a nationwide daylong lockdown on November 13, urging citizens from all walks of life to participate in the program.

Amid the unrest and call for protest, schools in Dhaka and other major cities switched to online classes and examinations, while public transportation also remained disrupted, with the Yunus-led interim government heightening security across the country.

The country remains on high alert amid rising tensions, with security forces, including the army and police, deployed at airports and key installations across Bangladesh.
