Washington/New Delhi: US President Donald Trump extended “warmest greetings” to Muslims for the holy month of Ramadan., noting that Trump said his administration “recommits to upholding religious liberty that is such an integral part of the American way of life.”

“Above all, we renew our resolve to build a future of peace and to recognize the dignity imprinted on every human soul,” Trump said, offering his best wishes for Ramadan.

Ramadan started on Saturday last week in the US, as well as in other countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and more. According to statistics from Pew Research, the community of Muslim Americans is diverse and is a growing population that is estimated at 3.45 million people of all ages. The number includes 2.15 million adults.

In the statement, Trump said the Muslim fasting month "is a time to draw hope, courage, and inspiration to lead lives of holiness and virtue."

"As millions of Muslim Americans begin their Ramadan observances, my Administration recommits to upholding religious liberty that is such an integral part of the American way of life,” said Trump.

"This Ramadan, I offer my best wishes for a season of joyous reflection on God’s endless grace and infinite love. May God bless you and your families during this wondrous season," he added.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from eating, drinking, and physical intimacy. Throughout the month, Muslims are encouraged to pray more, especially at night, recite the Holy Quran, give to those in need, and avoid any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to all citizens on the occasion of Ramadan. Taking to X, PM Modi posted, "As the blessed month of Ramzan begins, may it bring peace and harmony in our society. This sacred month epitomises reflection, gratitude and devotion, also reminding us of the values of compassion, kindness and service. Ramzan Mubarak!"

Ramadan commenced in India on Sunday, marking the first day of fasting for Muslims throughout the country. The celebration has also started in various other countries following the sighting of the crescent moon.

Last week, PM Modi attended the 25th edition of Jahan-e-Khusrau and extended his advance wishes for Ramadan. He also praised India's Sufi tradition for its message of inclusivity and harmony.

According to the Islamic calendar, the sighting of the moon determines the beginning and end of a month, which typically lasts 30 days.

Throughout Ramadan, Muslims observe a fast from early morning until sunset and participate in special evening prayers called Tarawih, during which the entire Quran is recited throughout the month. These prayers continue until the sighting of the Eid moon, marking the end of the fasting period and the beginning of celebrations.

Also, the holy Muslim fasting month started in Jammu and Kashmir, as lakhs of devout Muslims woke up before dawn to eat a ‘Sehri’ meal after mosques, shrines, and drum beaters announced the beginning of the predawn meal.

Markets were flooded with shoppers as they bought dates, sherbets, raisins and basil seeds, which are extensively used by the faithful during Ramadan.
