Actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, known for his comic timing, died in Mumbai early this week after a prolonged illness. A versatile actor, who also had directorial stints, Asrani was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital four days ago. He was originally a resident of Jaipur. His family shared the news only after his funeral was held at the Santacruz Crematorium.

"Asrani sahab was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days ago. From what the doctors told us, there was fluid (water) accumulation in his lungs. He died today, October 20, around 3:30 pm. The last rites have already been completed," Asrani's personal assistant, Babubhai, told India Today TV.

Asrani's contribution to the field of comic acting has been invaluable. Over several decades, he gave Hindi cinema many memorable characters and carved a special place in the hearts of the audience.

His career was a testament to his versatility and longevity, spanning over five decades and encompassing more than 350 films. His most significant contribution was as a comedic and supporting actor, roles which became the backbone of many major Hindi films.

The 1970s marked his peak, where he became one of the most bankable character actors, appearing in iconic movies such as 'Mere Apne', 'Koshish', 'Bawarchi', 'Parichay', 'Abhimaan', 'Chupke Chupke', 'Chhoti Si Baat', and 'Rafoo Chakkar'.

The veteran actor's most iconic role remains in Ramesh Sippy's action-drama 'Sholay ', where, as the eccentric jail warden, he became an unforgettable cultural touchstone.

Actor Akshay Kumar, who shared the screen with Asrani in numerous films, wrote on X, "I had worked and learned so much from him. What an absolute loss to our industry. God bless you Asrani sir, for giving us a million reasons to laugh. Om Shanti (sic)."
