Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to ban his forthcoming film, 'The Bengal Files', in the state. Agnihotri emphasized that the film should be evaluated on its artistic merit rather than its political implications. In a video message, he highlighted the importance of freedom of expression as a fundamental democratic principle.
In his appeal on social media, he addressed the West Bengal CM directly. Agnihotri encouraged her to view the film not just from a regional perspective but as a contribution to national discourse. He insisted that the audience should have the autonomy to make their own judgements about the film's content.
The plea from Agnihotri follows calls for the film's ban in West Bengal. This also led to the cancellation of its trailer launch and press events in Kolkata.
'The Bengal Files' covers the events of the Great Calcutta Killings of 1946 - the Direct Action Day, and the Noakhali riots. The film stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, Simrat Kaur, Namoshi Chakraborty, and Pallavi Joshi, amongst others.
In an exclusive interview with India Today.in, Agnihotri expressed, "It's very important that I make this film, make the younger generation aware, and enlighten them. And also, the entire community gets to express a generational trauma," Agnihotri explained.
