Veteran actor Anupam Kher has backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal asking citizens to save fuel and adopt more sustainable habits. This week, Kher shared a video of himself travelling from Jaipur to Delhi on the Vande Bharat Express, calling it a small step towards conserving resources.
This came after the PM's austerity appeal, where he urged Indians to embrace restraint amid economic pressures stemming from the protracted Iran conflict. To preserve foreign exchange reserves, he also urged citizens to delay gold purchases for a year and avoid foreign holidays and destination weddings.
In the self-recorded clip posted on social media, the actor said people should reduce fuel consumption by making more responsible choices in everyday life. Referring to the Prime Minister’s appeal, he said public transport, carpooling and avoiding car use for short distances were practical changes that people could make.
Kher said, “Namaskar friends, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to the people of the country that we should all try to save petrol and diesel. Where possible, we should use public transport. We should do carpooling. We should avoid taking out our car for short distances. And in our daily lives, we should make small changes and contribute to the country. I think he is absolutely right.”
Explaining his own decision, the actor said he had chosen to travel by train instead of flying or using a vehicle. “And with that in mind, I am travelling from Jaipur to Delhi by Vande Bharat train. This is not a big sacrifice. But if we all start making small efforts, it can have a big impact,” he said.
Kher was recently honored at the UK International Film Festival Flame Awards 2026, where he won the Best Supporting Actor award for 'Calorie'.
