Attendees were encouraged to remember the fallen and express gratitude and respect to their families.
The speakers also highlighted the history of Memorial Day, originally known as “Decoration Day,” which emerged after the American Civil War, when communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Over time, it evolved into a national day of remembrance honoring all American military personnel who lost their lives in service to the country.
A special recognition was presented to Shyamala Philip, mother of Lieutenant Commander Jophiel Phillips of the United States Navy, in appreciation of her dedication, sacrifice, and support in raising a son committed to serving the nation. Her recognition reflected the pride, strength, and values she has instilled, which will continue to inspire both her family and the wider community.
Special musical presentations added warmth and inspiration to the gathering. The event served as a meaningful reminder of patriotism, service, sacrifice, and the enduring value of peace and freedom, while bringing together members of the Indian-American community in a spirit of unity and gratitude.
