‘Shameful, baseless’: BJP attacks Rahul Gandhi for remarks on PM Modi

New Delhi: The BJP called out Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi belongs to the general category and not the Other Backward Class (OBC).

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Has this become Rahul Gandhi’s level? The poor people, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Communities of our country considered Narendra Modi their leader. The future of the Congress party is in darkness… Rahul Gandhi should stop making these shameful and baseless statements.”

Addressing a public event during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Odisha’s Jharsuguda, Rahul Gandhi alleged that PM Modi lied about his caste. “PM Modi was not born in the OBC category. He was born in the Teli caste in Gujarat,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“The community was given the tag of OBC in the year 2000 by the BJP. He was born in the general caste,” he alleged. The BJP, however, denied Rahul Gandhi’s allegations, stating that PM Modi’s caste was notified as OBC two years before he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Quoting Rahul Gandhi’s statement in a post on X (formerly Twitter), BJP’s IT wing chief Amit Malviya said, “This is a blatant lie. PM Narendra Modi’s caste was notified as an OBC on Oct 27, 1999, a full 2 years BEFORE he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The entire Nehru-Gandhi family, starting from Jawaharlal Nehru to Rahul Gandhi, have been against OBCs.”

Malviya also shared a gazette notification, showing the inclusion of the ‘Modh Ghanchi’ caste under the OBC ambit in 1999.
