New Delhi: Political leaders congratulated Indian-American Democratic leader Zohran Mamdani on his victory in the New York City mayoral elections, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo.
Following his victory, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor extended his wishes to the NYC Mayor-elect, sharing a New York Times screenshot titled “Mamdani’s improbable run ends in victory.” He wrote, “Wonderfully apt! Warmest congratulations to my old friend @MiraPagliNair on her son @ZohranKMamdani’s spectacular victory and to his uncles, my Stephanian friends Vicky and Gautam Nair, for their nephew’s triumph!”
Congress national spokesperson Supriya Shrinate highlighted Mamdani's mention of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. “@ZohranKMamdani invokes the immortal words from Pandit Nehru’s Tryst With Destiny speech to honor the architect of modern India. Nehru’s legacy continues to echo across oceans and generations...” Shrinate posted on X.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also cheered for Mamdani, saying he had not just won NYC, but also “all our hearts.” Thanking Mamdani, she added that he had also given the hope “that love & being brave & true to one’s self ultimately triumphs."
Swaraj India founder and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan said Mamdani's win has “many lessons for politicians across the world.” “Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim immigrant, wins New York’s mayoral election! He calls himself a Democratic Socialist, and favors free buses, free childcare & freeze on rents in NY,” Bhushan said.
