New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday underlined the growing significance of BRICS on the global stage, after interacting with foreign ministers and heads of delegation from BRICS nations.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said he was “glad to interact” with leaders from BRICS countries, describing the platform as an important driver of cooperation among emerging economies.

Highlighting the bloc’s evolving role, Modi noted that BRICS has emerged as an important platform for the Global South, reflecting the aspirations and priorities of developing nations.

“BRICS has emerged as an important platform for advancing cooperation among emerging economies and giving voice to the aspirations of the Global South,” he wrote.

Referring to India’s chairmanship this year, PM Modi outlined key priorities, stating that the country would work closely with member nations to strengthen multilateralism. He added that India’s focus would remain on promoting sustainable development, enhancing economic resilience, and building a more inclusive world order.

The BRICS foreign ministers last met on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 26, 2025, when India chaired the discussions as the incoming BRICS chair for 2026.

PM Modi also met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi. The meetings came amid rising tensions in West Asia and marked the first high-level diplomatic engagement involving India since the Iran war began.

Iran welcomes India’s peace push

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that his country will welcome any initiative to establish peace in West Asia by major powers, like India, while adding that one BRICS member country has prevented the group from reaching a consensus over the ongoing regional conflict.

The minister added that Tehran is developing a new service-and-payment-based framework for the merchant vessels that will pass through the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international norms.
