New Delhi: India has announced its long-awaited national climate action plans for 2031 to 2035, committing to achieve 60 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2035. It has also vowed to reduce the emission intensity of its GDP by 47 per cent by 2035 from 2005 levels.
In its earlier Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), India had vowed to slash the emission intensity of its GDP by 33-35 per cent by 2030 and achieve a 40 per cent share of non-fossil resource-based electric power installed capacity. Both targets were met ahead of the committed timelines. India’s emission intensity reduced by 36 per cent from 2005 to 2020, and now the 2035 target is to increase it by 47 per cent.
India has also raised its ambition of creating a carbon sink through forest and tree cover to 3.5-4.0 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2035 from the 2005 level. The country has already created 2.29 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2021.
