New York: Popular yoga guru Sharath Jois passed away during a hiking trail, due to a heart attack, near the campus of the University of Virginia on Monday. Jois was just 53 years old and was leading the Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, which was founded by his grandfather.
The late Ashtanga yoga teacher has also taught several A-list celebrities in the past such as American singer Madonna, and actress Gwyneth Paltrow amongst others.
Jois learnt the art form from his grandfather Krishna Pattabhi Jois, a legendary yoga master.
While K Pattabhi Jois is credited with pushing Ashtanga yoga to mainstream popularity, Jois is known for memorializing his legacy following his grandfather's death in 2009.
As per sources, the Ashtanga yoga teacher was anticipating starting a new batch of classes after returning to India in December.
On the same day of his tragic passing, he posted a video on his Instagram with the caption “Ashtanga Yoga Special Course, Contemplative Sciences Center, University of Virginia.”
His yoga followers were shocked to hear the news. Condolences poured in the comment section.
One user wrote, “I will forever hear your voice as I practice.” another also paid tribute with a comment, “Rest in love Boss - I hope 11/11 has beamed you straight into infinite light”.
Jois is survived by his wife Shruti Jois and two children, along with his parents.
