India-USA space collaboration: The frontiers of a futuristic partnership

Washington, DC: Embassy of India in Washington DC hosted an event “India-USA Space Collaboration: The Frontiers of a Futuristic partnership” on the 15th of September 2025 at India House.  

The event highlighted the strong India-USA collaboration in space domain over the past several decades and celebrated the recent successes including launch of NISAR satellite and the Axiom Mission-4 through which Gaganyatri(Astronaut) Shubhanshu Shukla traveled to the International Space Station. 

The event was attended by key representatives from government, space agencies, space industry, think tanks and academia. 

Ambassador of India to the United States Vinay Kwatra addressed the gathering and shared his insights into the legacy and the future goals of India’s program and the potential for future collaboration between Governments and industries of both countries. 

Dr. Karen St. Germain, Director of the Earth Science Division, NASA delivered a talk titled “Observing Together with NISAR” and shared her experiences on collaborations between NASA and ISRO during the NISAR mission.  

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams, Nick Hague and Butch Wilmore were joined by India’s Gaganyatri(Astronaut) Shubhanshu Shukla in virtual mode for a panel discussion titled “Moments in Orbit” where they shared their personal journeys including their path to becoming an astronaut, experiences in space and evolutions in space travel. 

The event underscored the various milestones in space collaboration between India and USA, and highlighted the current space missions and programs being undertaken by both countries and the opportunities for commercial space industry and future plans for human space missions to Moon and Mars.
