American Airlines inaugurates New York–Delhi Flight, a first since 2012

New York: American Airlines started a direct flight from New York to Delhi after a gap of more than nine years. On November 12, the carrier officially inaugurated nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi with a Boeing 777-ER.

The aircraft is one of the most premium aircraft American operates and has dedicated international first-class cabins and 52 reverse herringbone lie-flat business class seats along with premium economy seats.

292 passengers traveled on the New Delhi-bound American Airlines flight from New York – JFK on November 12. The route will now run daily year-round. The last flight to Delhi by American Airlines was in 2012. American will be the second US operator after United Airlines to fly on the JFK-Delhi route.

As per the schedule, the 15-hour long flight will depart from Terminal 8 at JFK at 18:51 daily and arrive in New Delhi at 20:30 the next day. The return flight would depart from New Delhi at 00:55 and arrive in New York at 7:04 the next day, all local times.

According to schedules from Cirium, American Airlines last operated a flight to New Delhi in 2012. The airlines used to operate a Boeing 777 from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to New Delhi but the route was discontinued in wake of high oil prices and viability gaps.

American has also announced a Seattle-Bangalore flight from March 2022. The flight is part of the carrier’s tie-up with Alaska Airlines and is aimed at catering to business travelers bound to the tech hub in India. The airline is also expected to come up with a flight on the Mumbai route soon.

Air India and United Airlines are already operating direct flights to Delhi from JFK. United operates flights to Delhi from three other US gateways namely San Francisco, Chicago, and Newark. It also runs a flight to Mumbai from Newark. Similarly, Air India flies to San Francisco, Chicago, Washington D.C., Newark, and New York (JFK) from Delhi and operates a flight from San Francisco to Bangalore.
