Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has claimed that at least 1.2 crore names will be deleted in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bengal and wondered how many people will make it to the final rolls to be published by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on February 28.
"At least 80 lakh names must have been deleted under logical discrepancies, while 58 lakh names were deleted earlier. If we exclude the 20 lakh dead voters, the total number of deletions will stand at 1.2 crore as on February 28," Banerjee said. The chief minister was referring to the 58 lakh names that were deleted following the draft roll publication.
"Initially, 58 lakh names were deleted. Then, in a clandestine manner, in the name of logical discrepancies, 1.2 crore names were deleted. There were no such rules," Banerjee claimed.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has allowed the Calcutta High Court to deploy civil judges and also make requisition of judicial officers from neighboring Jharkhand and Odisha to deal with 50 lakh claims and objections in the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in West Bengal.
