Patna: Barely four months after being sworn in for a record 10th term as Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on March 5, setting off intense political activity in Patna and fuelling speculation over who could succeed him in the top post.
In a message to the people of Bihar ahead of the nomination, the Janata Dal-United (JDU) supremo thanked voters for their long-standing support, saying their trust had enabled him to serve the state for more than two decades.
Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha move comes soon after the NDA’s sweeping victory in the recent Bihar Assembly elections. JDU sources have said that Nitish Kumar is likely to continue as Chief Minister at least until the Rajya Sabha election on March 16.
If elected to the Rajya Sabha, he will add another milestone to his long political career. He has previously served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the Bihar Legislative Council, and the Lok Sabha.
