New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey has accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of misleading the nation and moved a substantive motion against him in the Parliament, seeking termination of his Parliamentary membership and a lifetime ban on the Congress leader from contesting elections.

The BJP MP’s action came a day after Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha speech, in which he accused the ruling government of compromising India’s national interests in the trade deal with the United States, saying, “You have sold India.”

Earlier, Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said BJP members said they would file a Breach of Privilege notice against Gandhi “for misleading the House and also making baseless statements”.

However, as per sources, the government decided to expunge portions of Gandhi’s speech delivered in the Lower House from the official records, as the allegations he made were not properly authenticated.

A day after a heated exchange in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi claimed the government has disregarded the concerns of workers and farmers in its decision-making, arguing that their voices were ignored in shaping policies affecting their future.

In response, Union Minister Piyush Goyal criticized Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the India–US interim trade deal, accusing him of spreading misinformation in Parliament. "He (Rahul) displays childish behavior in Parliament, ignoring the established rules, regulations, and traditions of the House," Goyal said.

No-confidence motion against LS Speaker Om Birla

The Opposition has submitted a notice to move a resolution to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from office, stepping up its confrontation with the Chair amid continued disruptions in the Lower House.

A no-confidence motion carrying 118 signatures has been submitted to the Lok Sabha secretary general, Utpal Kumar Singh. The notice was submitted by Congress leaders K Suresh, Gaurav Gogoi, and Md Javed.

According to the text of the notice, accessed by Hindustan Times daily, the resolution alleged a “blatantly partisan manner” in the conduct of Lok Sabha proceedings and stated that Leaders of Opposition parties have repeatedly not been allowed to speak, calling it a denial of a basic democratic right.
