The top contenders for CM's post include Suvendu Adikari, Agnimitra Paul, and Samik Bhattacharya.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to take oath for forming the new government in West Bengal on May 9, which coincides with Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

"The oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Minister of West Bengal will take place on 9th May..." BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya told the news agency ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be attending the oath-taking ceremony, had strongly signalled during his campaign rally in Barrackpore. "I am going back with the confidence that after the results on May 4, I will come back here to attend the BJP's oath-taking ceremony," he declared.

Following Bengal's historic verdict on May 4, PM Modi invoked Tagore's ideals while addressing party workers at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, saying the BJP's resolve is to create a Bengal "where the mind is without fear and the head is held high" - echoing the spirit of Gurudev's timeless vision.

The BJP has ended the TMC's 15-year rule in Bengal, crossing the majority mark comfortably in the 294-member Assembly. The TMC was trounced significantly, marking one of its worst performances in recent years.

'I won't resign': Mamata Banerjee

Outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee has categorically ruled out stepping down after her party’s electoral setback, declaring, “There is no question of my resignation. I will not resign.”

Insisting that “we did not lose the election”, Banerjee claimed the verdict was not a genuine public mandate but the result of a “conspiracy”.
