On its concluding day, the golden edition of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announced major awards for two Indian movies, 'Homebound' and 'Vimukt' (In Search of The Sky). While 'Homebound' is the second runner-up in the International People’s Choice Awards category, 'Vimukt' is the recipient of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Award.
Set in Madhya Pradesh state, 'Vimukt' follows a couple who travel to Maha Kumbh with their mentally challenged son, hoping to find a cure for him. The NETPAC Award jury, in its statement, said they selected the film “for offering an indelible tale of tolerance, desperation and faith, conveyed through a unique lens of realism and poetics, elevated by striking performances”.
The jury also mentioned: “The film transports the audience to rural central India, where an impoverished elderly couple contends with their cognitively challenged adult son and the villagers who threaten their existence. A beacon of hope comes in the form of the Maha Kumbh Mela, a pilgrimage to the world’s largest spiritual gathering, where they seek renewal and new possibilities of life.”
'Homebound', starring Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, received a standing ovation during its North American premiere at the festival. The film drew acclaim from both audiences and critics for its layered storytelling and performances, marking a noteworthy moment for Indian filmmakers on the world stage.
Director Neeraj Ghaywan expressed his delight at the recognition, stating, “Thrilled to announce that our film #HOMEBOUND just won the @TIFF_NET International People’s Choice Award as a second runner-up!! (sic).”
The International People’s Choice Award results saw South Korean director Park Chan-wook’s 'No Other Choice' take the top honour, with Joachim Trier’s 'Sentimental Value' as first runner-up.
