The New York state assembly member is dropping her campaign for city comptroller.

New York: Jenifer Rajkumar, a Queens Democratic Assembly member and close ally of Mayor Eric Adams, has announced that she is officially entering the race for New York City public advocate.

Rajkumar, who currently represents District 38 of the NY state assembly, also withdrew from the race for the position of city comptroller to challenge current public advocate Jumaane Williams.

“The state of our Government is in peril... Today, I am announcing my candidacy to be the next Public Advocate of the City of New York," the Indian American Democrat assembly member said in a press release.

“Our city is facing a crisis of governance... we need proven fighters who will focus on the issues that all New Yorkers care about. From attacking the cost-of-living crisis to restoring public safety on our streets and on our subways, I’m excited to bring bold, results-driven leadership to our City,” Rajkumar said.

As the first South Asian-American woman elected to a New York state office, Rajkumar drove through historic legislation making Diwali a school holiday in NYC. In addition, she introduced and passed nationally recognized legislation establishing human rights for domestic workers.

With over four times as much cash-on-hand as the incumbent public advocate, assembly member Rajkumar is already expected to qualify for over $1,000,000 in public matching funds, her press release said.
