Queens, NY: U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) issued the following statement on the murder of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam.
“I am horrified by the senseless mass shooting that took place in Manhattan and devastated over the tragic loss of life including the death of Officer Didarul Islam.
Officer Islam was an immigrant from Bangladesh who was pursuing the American dream. He was a devoted family man who worked tirelessly and courageously to protect our city and keep New Yorkers safe.
Whenever I talk about the Bangladeshi community – like the one I’m proud to represent in Congress – I constantly highlight how those of Bangladeshi descent give so much to New York and the nation, and Officer Islam embodied these tremendous contributions. On Monday, he made the ultimate sacrifice.
Officer Islam died a hero and his service to our city will never be forgotten.
I send my deepest condolences to Officer Islam’s loved ones. I’m keeping them in my prayers, and my thoughts are also with the NYPD and Bangladeshi community at this very difficult time.”
