A massive earthquake measuring 7.7 on Richter scale struck central Myanmar, with its tremors shaking Thailand on Friday. It toppled buildings, ruptured roads, killed at least 20 and caused widespread devastation.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the 7.7-magnitude tremor hit at a depth of 9.97 kilometres and was followed by a powerful aftershock. Moreover, the epicenter was about 16 km from the city of Mandalay in Myanmar, which boasts a population of around 1.2 million people.
Naypyidaw International Airport near Myanmar’s capital sustained massive damage following the powerful earthquake. BNO News reported that at least five people died when the air traffic control tower collapsed.
At least 81 people are feared trapped under debris in Thai capital Bangkok after an under-construction building collapsed, forcing the government to declare an emergency in the wake of the damage from the earthquake.
Reacting to the unfolding crisis in Myanmar following the massive earthquake earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday, “…Today, an earthquake struck Myanmar, causing the collapse of several large buildings. That is why India has taken the initiative to establish the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) at a global level. This is not just an organisation but a commitment to preparing the world for natural disasters. India believes that infrastructure—whether buildings, roads, or homes—should remain safe in the face of such calamities. To tackle future challenges, it is crucial for all nations to work together.”
Following the earthquake, the Indian embassy in Thailand said that any Indian wanting help should reach out to the embassy at +66 618819218.
The embassy further said in a post on X that there is no report of any Indian being harmed yet.
All members of the embassy in Bangkok and consulate in Chiang Mai are safe, according to the post.
