Bangkok: The deaths in Thailand after a construction crane collapsed and crashed onto a train have risen to 22, the Associated Press reported. Nearly 80 people were injured as a result of the accident, news agency Reuters reported, with local police saying more bodies remain in the wreckage that had to be pulled out.
The accident occurred this week in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, which is 230 km northeast of Bangkok. The train was travelling from Thailand's capital, Bangkok, to Ubon Ratchathani province.
Police said the crane was working on a high-speed rail project when it collapsed and crashed on the passing train. The incident caused the carriage to derail and catch fire, news agency Reuters reported. The fire has been doused, and rescue work is currently underway, police said.
Television footage from the scene showed emergency workers scrambling amid twisted metal, with a brightly coloured passenger train lying on its side as smoke rose from the damaged carriages.
