Nepal has reappointed Sudan Gurung as Home Minister after he was cleared of wrongdoing in a financial investigation, government officials said this week.

Gurung had stepped down in April to ensure a fair probe after allegations surfaced over undisclosed financial investments.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah re-inducted Gurung into the cabinet following a report by a government-appointed committee that examined the allegations.

Gurung, a prominent youth anti-corruption activist, emerged as a key figure during the 2025 youth-led protests that contributed to the fall of the previous government.

He was appointed Home Minister after winning a parliamentary seat in the March elections under the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which secured a strong mandate. However, he resigned shortly after taking office when questions were raised about his financial disclosures and alleged links to individuals under investigation for money laundering. Gurung rejected the allegations, describing them as “rumors".

Following his return, Gurung is expected to resume oversight of internal security and law enforcement. His earlier tenure drew attention after he ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over alleged involvement in the crackdown on protesters.
