New York: Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to deliver a 'major address', marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, at New York City Hall on Friday.

According to media reports, the New York City Mayor will deliver his remarks “surrounded by recently naturalized citizens,” from a desk used by George Washington in 1789, when he was inaugurated as the country’s first president in New York. This desk is older than the Resolute Desk and was used by Washington when it was located in Federal Hall, the first Capitol building for the United States.

The speech will reflect on New York City's role in the nation's history and its identity as America's symbolic gateway, CBS News reported, citing City Hall officials.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has seen his political prominence rise after successfully backing three congressional candidates in House races last week, with two of them ousting incumbent lawmakers. He has maintained a “productive” relationship with President Donald Trump and met with him twice inside the Oval Office.

INS Sudarshini in US for 250th anniversary

The Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship INS Sudarshini arrived at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland as part of the landmark transoceanic expedition, Lokayan 26.

INS Sudarshini’s visit to Baltimore highlights India’s rich maritime heritage and the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between the Indian Navy and the United States Navy.

During its stay, the ship will undertake maritime engagement and community outreach activities ahead of the Sail250 Maryland celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The Indian Defense Ministry noted that before arriving in Baltimore, INS Sudarshini participated in the Sail250 Virginia celebrations at Norfolk, representing India in the Parade of Sail and the City Crew Parade.

The Ministry added that having sailed over 13 thousand nautical miles in five months from Kochi to Norfolk, the transoceanic voyage stands as a testament to India’s seafaring traditions and the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, fostering friendship, cooperation, and mutual trust across the oceans.
