Environmental Rotaract of Nassau County celebrates Charter Night in response to LI’s climate crisis

Tuesday, 24 Jun, 2025

Rockville Centre, NY: As the Long Island community confronts growing  environmental threats like climate change, coastal erosion, sea level rise, and flooding, a  dedicated group of local change-makers is taking action.

The newly formed Environmental Rotaract NC LI will officially celebrate its New Charter Night and formal induction into the family of Rotary International on Monday, July 14, 2025,  at Mac Arthur Park Restaurant, located at 1 Maple Avenue in Rockville Centre, NY.

This milestone event marks the launch of the first community based environmentally focused  Rotaract club in Long Island a.k.a. Rotary District 7255 , created in response to the urgent need  for local environmental leadership and sustainable action.

“Long Island’s unique coastal environment is both our treasure and our responsibility,” said  Mellisa Griffin, the founding president of Environmental Rotaract NC LI. “We came together as  Rotaract Club with low membership dues to be accessible to all–especially young people– because we believe in hands-on action and global partnership to preserve and protect our natural  environment.”

In recent months, the Eco-Rotaract team has already made tangible impact by:

  •  Planting native species to support biodiversity
  •  Installing bat boxes to encourage natural sustainable mosquito control
  •  Removed invasive species that are consuming our parks

These initiatives reflect the club’s commitment to Rotary International’s guiding environmental  principles of sustainability, which include:

  1.  Protecting the environment through direct action
  2.  Supporting green legislation
  3.  Conserving natural habitats like forests and waterways
  4.  Educating both members and the broader community
  5.  Securing funding for ecological programs
  6.  Promoting sustainable gardening and landscaping
  7.  Advancing environmental justice and peace

Eco-Rotaract of Nassau County joins a global network of over 46,000 Rotary and Rotaract clubs  as part of Rotary International, a 1.4 million-member organization spanning more than 200  countries. As part of its long-term vision, the club also plans to engage in at least one  international environmental service projects, partnering with Rotary groups worldwide to  exchange ideas and drive global impact.
