Nominee for Attorney General breaks new ground for South Asian Americans in New York politics

New York: Saritha Komatireddy, the Republican nominee for New York Attorney General, has made history as the first South Asian American to be nominated for statewide office by a major political party in the history of New York State.

Komatireddy, the daughter of Indian immigrants who came to New York in the 1980s, ran unopposed in the 2026 New York State Primary after entering the race in December. Her candidacy represents a landmark moment for South Asian Americans — a fast-growing community whose political influence is reshaping elections across the country — and marks a new chapter in New York’s long history of immigrant communities rising to the highest levels of public life.

Komatireddy is a former Assistant United States Attorney who served for over a decade in the Eastern District of New York, where she prosecuted cases involving international terrorism, cybercrime, transnational criminal organizations, money laundering, and foreign public corruption. She held multiple leadership roles at EDNY, including Chief of International Narcotics and Money Laundering, and later served as Chief of Staff at the Drug Enforcement Administration. She has argued before federal courts, led national security investigations, and received multiple Attorney General’s Awards for her service. Komatireddy graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, clerked for then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and is currently a Partner at Holtzman Vogel and an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School. She is a proud mother of four.

“My parents came to this country from Hyderabad to work hard, serve others, and build a better life for their family. I am honored to be a statewide candidate for New York Attorney General and am running to make New York safer for every community and every New Yorker.”
